When it comes to basic design there are three principles that you should live by. The first of these principles is the rule of thirds. The rule of thirds states that the focal point of any composition should be anywhere but the center of the image. When we refer to the focal point we mean the main subject of the image or the element of the image that is meant to be the center of attention. The focal point should instead be positioned in the lower third, the left third, the upper third or the right third of the image. Placing the focal point in one of these locations will help draw the viewer’s eyes to the other supporting elements that are present in the image.
Placing the focal point in the center of the image will result in all of the viewer’s attention being direct specifically to the middle of the composition and to nowhere else. This will result in the viewer frequently overlooking the other elements that are present in the image. The rule of thirds is most relatable to two dimensional design but is also relevant when considering three dimensional design as well as interior design in that no matter what you are designing it will help you balance the elements of your design and draw an appropriate level of attention to you focal point will not forgetting about you secondary design elements.
The second element on design that can be universally applied is that when grouping design elements it is almost always more visually appealing to group objects in odd numbers that it is to group them in even numbers. Groupings of three, five or seven will add more visual interest to your design than groupings of two, four or six. The ideas behind this is that when you group objects in even numbers the human eye tends to pair them up and then fails to take in the surrounding visual information to the left or right of them. When the eye takes in a grouping of odd numbers it anticipates that missing element and this leads the eye to the next element of the design and therefore facilitates the viewer taking in the whole composition.
The third basic rule of design is that when you are grouping design elements try to vary the height and visual weight of the elements that you are grouping together. This keeps the eye moving and also creates a visual hierarchy that helps bring a sense of order to your design.
